Photobook Recommendations: The Xmas Edition

Not feeling festive? Good. This is a reading list for the real ones — no twinkle lights, no tidy resolutions.

Nan Goldin’s Ballad of Sexual Dependency still hits like a gut punch: bruised, beautiful, unsanitized. Larry Sultan’s Here and Home takes you into the weird theater of American suburbia — his own family cast as stars of their slow-motion unravel. Surrealism: Desire Unbound is less coffee table, more fever dream — full of lust, death, and the unconscious doing cartwheels. And then there’s Miles Aldridge’s Other Pictures, a collection of personal photographs capturing his family life from 1994 to 2011. Not cozy, not calm, but exactly right for the season.
